This story's being talked about in the firearm training community following last week's incredible actions by an Austin, TX police officer. SGT Adam Johnson was just finishing his shift as a mounted patrolman when Larry McQuillians, described as a 'homegrown extremist' opened fire. McQuillians, armed with several weapons and driving a vehilce containing numerous homemade propane tank bombs fired hundreds of rounds into the police department and nearby buildings. The shooter was later found to have a map of pre planned target locations including two area churches.
SGT Johnson and several officers were not far from police headquarters when the shooting started. He immediately began to move he and his partner's horses into a holding area as other officers began to assess where the shooter was. The shooter suddenly appeared as the Sergeant was manuevering the horses. SGT Johnson instinctively drew his duty weapon and, while holding the reins in one hand took the shot with the other - at an extreme range of over 300 feet. That aimed shot killed McQuillians and abruptly ended the armed encounter.
